"It was a proud day for Albuquerque Public Schools," says veteran Superintendent Winston Brooks, "when Luke Rudys accepted his award for National Teacher of the year. It brought a culmination to, not only Luke's hard work, but also for APS since the abolishment of school boards." Mr. Rudys started his pedagogical career at Dennis Chavez Elementary working in the special education program. "I wasn't sure at first what I was getting into, but after the first day in the classroom, I knew my life would never be the same," remembers Mr. Rudys. We caught up with one of Mr. Rudys' ex-students, Frederich Matthews, on the UNM campus; we asked him if he thought Mr. Rudys was a good teacher. "Absolutely, I mean back in those days I suffered from sever emotional disturbance, and other sever behavioral disorders; I had no practical or social skills. Now, I'm at UNM with a full scholarship studying philosophy and history- I just made the Dean's list." Parents as well have fond remembrances, "He just really seemed to care. I'll admit, at times I wasn't the most easy to work with parent, and at those times I think he found it necessary to not pull any punches. He, simply put, was only interested in the well being of the students," says parent Monique Jones. "I remember those Friday afternoons, where the shadows creeped long in the deserted parking lot- there we'd be, in my office discussing psychology or philosophy- basically trying to crack each case. We had fun with it, which perhaps is why Luke was always so dedicated," says long time friend, ex-coworker, now administrator Hansel Christensen. We asked him where to go from here, to which he replied, "No where and everywhere. This doesn't change a thing for me, I going right back into the classroom."
I love that you gave your fake characters names. I debated doing that but decided against it. I like how optimistic you are for your emotionally disturbed kids. After working with several of them I find it hard to have such a great life for them and sadly most of them don;t end up having great lives unless people like youcan really help them out. It takes an amazing person to be able to take on these kids and I believe you wll succeed in changing their lives.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how this wonderdul article praising Mr. Rudys doesn't make any mention regarding this his massive alcoholism which is a daily occurrence, or his knowledge of the married assistant principal at his school engaging in intercourse with another married teacher (who is now pregnant)in his classroom after hours and him not reporting it or the fun fact that he is an adulterer who prayed on my wife's mental illness to lure her to his home and befriend her with alcohol and drugs for the past three years and had a sexual relationship with her which destroyed my family. This "teacher role model - teacher of the year" working with little children found out that my wife had had lied to him and ordered her to be punished and gave her options of how to hurt herself finally arriving to forcing her to mark her body with a tatoo that reads "he is gone" (referring to me) and which he uses to shame her and humiliate her. He took advantage if my wife's chronic sadness and her trauma and used it for his benefit while he made it a point to tell me the things he was doing with her to inflict more hurt.
DeleteI wonder what this person with no moral fiber and no values and such sadistic tendencies could be teaching little impressionable children (special ed at that). He is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Wow from severe issues and no social skills to full scholarship double major and dean’s list! You go Luke! While this is highly unrealistic I think it tells of your passion, dedication, optimism and ambition. It tells me that you are not looking at what these kids can not to but instead looking at their unending potential. That is the way they should be thought of. Many people see these kids for their conditions or issues but to look at them as kids first and foremost is the best for them. Good job Luke and keep it up! I also like how you ended it. You are right teaching is not about some award we may or may not receive but it is about everyday giving all we have in the classroom. Well stated.

I like how school boards may not exist in your potential future. Bureaucracy, especially when it comes to schools, often inhibits the progress that could happen more efficiently. Everyone who wants to teach should have the goal to be more than an adequate teacher. It seems that the kind of teacher you will become is one that is humble and has an emphasis on the needs and well being of his students. Plus working with colleagues and parents on approaches to have for students and your class will also be valuable.

There is a philosopher hiding in that special education teacher. What is interesting is that I took in high school such a class (called CORE and was for college bound AP type students). It worked there but these were motivated bright students who wanted to learn and who the study of philosophy helped to make introspection possible, understanding the world real, and deciding who they were or were to become more evident. I wonder in your at-risk environment how this can play out when such standard activities as journal writing, open letters, poetry, drama exercises all seek to bring out feelings for success in education. I would be interested in your thoughts on this idea.

Teachers who have chosen to go into teaching students with special need it is important for them to believe that their students can do anything that they put their mind to. I know what you wrote above has a lot of fluff in it, but I truly feel you have that quality in you. The students who will be in your classes will benefit greatly from it.
